Beach of Heaven, A History of Wahkiakum County, by Irene Martin.
Washington State University Press, c1997.
“Beach of Heaven is a history of one of the earliest settled areas in Washington.  As the birthplace of the state’s canned salmon industry and the cooperative extension movement, Wahkiakum County has a historical significance far beyond its borders.”
“Yet this book is much more than a county history.  It is the story of the development of a place, of the settlement of ethnic groups, of the establishment of social and transportation networks that made life livable in a wild and forested country.  As Irene Martin writes, Beach of Heaven is ‘an emotional engagement with the place we call home.’”

Clearing in the Wild, A  by Jane Kirkpatrick
Young Emma Wagner chafes at the constraints of Bethel colony, an 1850s religious community in Missouri that is determined to remain untainted by the concerns of the world.  A passionate and independent thinker, she resents the limitations placed on women, who are expected to serve in quiet submission.  In a community where dissent of any form is discouraged, Emma finds it difficult to rein in her tongue–and often doesn’t even try to do so, fueling the animosity between her and the colony’s charismatic and increasingly autocratic leader, Wilhelm Keil.
Eventually Emma and her husband, Christian, are sent along with eight other men to scout out a new location in the northwest where the Bethelites can prepare to await “the last days.”  Christian believes they’ve found the ideal situation in Washington territory, but when Keil arrives with the rest of the community, he rejects Christian’s choice in favor of moving to Oregon.
Emma pushes her husband to take this opportunity to break away from the group, but her longed-for influence brings unexpected consequences. As she seeks a refuge for her wounded faith, she learns that her passionate nature can be her greatest strength–if she can harness it effectively.

Fins, Finns & Astorians, A Glimpse into Astoria's Fabled fishing Community and Finnish Heritage - A Bygone Era, by Greg Jacob.
"Astoria boomed once the canning industry took off along the lower Columbia River.  Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes flocked to the area to make a living in the flourishing fishing industry, in logging and in farming.  By 1890 Astoria was home to fourteen canneries, fifty-four saloons, and thirty-five brothels, and half of the town's population could trace its roots to Finland.  In 1897 two hundred fishermen purchased a cannery site and it became known as the Union Fishermen's Cooperative Packing Company (Union Fish, for short).  This book tells the story of some of the people associated with this cannery, the gillnet fishing industry prior to WWII, and Uniontown (also known as Finntown)."

Thirteen Swedes, by Douglas Allen
The THIRTEEN SWEDES weren’t exactly who they appeared to be.  Their true identity was Finland-Swede, or Swedish-Finns.  They were Swedish in language and culture, but politically and socially, former inhabitants and citizens of Finland.
Of the thirteen men who formed the Smith Creek Logging company in 1932, nine had emigrated from Finland – the other four were sons of the emigrants.
The men capitalized their partnership with everyone putting up a $150 stake to get the company started.  In 1945, they went their individual ways, concluding thirteen successful years of logging in the Pacific Northwest.
