Glass
Containers
Getting the shucked
oysters to the consumer was achieved in numerous ways. Initially it
was probably common to sell in bulk by the pound or count. To make
it more convenient, not to mention sanitary, oysters for the smaller
retail markets were placed in glass containers. This is still a
common practice today but the container types have gone through many
changes. The early glass containers looked very much like the milk
or cream bottles which they likely were copied from. The two
displayed here both have the word oysters embossed in the glass but
there probably were many unmarked ones which of course could be
recycled for either milk, cream or oysters. The two bottles below
are from the east coast and the cover cap is one used by a Willapa
processing firm in the 1930-1940 period.
