What are Household Hazardous Wastes?

What Qualifies as Household Hazardous Waste?

Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are household products that contain ingredients that are harmful to human health or the environment.  If not properly used, stored, and disposed, these chemicals can cause environmental, health and fire hazards.

All HHW exhibit one or more of the following characteristics.  They may be:

  • Paints, thinners, gasoline and kerosene
  • Auto and boat maintenance products (used motor oil, filters, antifreeze, batteries and brake fluid)
  • Pesticides including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides
  • Glues and adhesives
  • Solvents and Cleaning supplies
  • Pool and hobby chemicals
  • Ignitable
  • Corrosive
  • Reactive/Explosive

   Please....

When hazardous wastes are poured down the drain or dumped onto the ground, they can contaminate the soil and ground water that feeds nearby wells, streams, lakes or salt water bodies.  HHW can cause septic or sewer system malfunctions.  Hazardous items placed in the trash can injure municipal waste handlers, cause explosions in garbage trucks and contaminate landfills.
  • Keep products in their original containers
  • Never mix product
  • Prevent products from tipping or spilling during transport
  • Place all leaking containers in plastic bag and box

What household products can be thrown into the garbage?

Look Before You Buy

  • Dried out latex paint.  You can solidify the small quantities of paint still left in the can by adding kitty litter or sawdust and allowing it to dry in a well ventilated area.  Take paint that cannot be handled by these methods to the HHW facility.
  • Spackle/joint compound
  • Non-toxic glues (i.e. Elmer's). Check the label for warnings.
  • Look for safer alternatives to hazardous products
  • Buy the least hazardous product
  • Buy only as much of a hazardous product
  • Buy only as much of a hazardous product as you need
  • Read labels carefully

Items We Do Not Accept

  • Ammunition
  • Explosives
  • Radioactive Materials
  • Empty Containers
  • Waste in containers larger than 5 gallons
  • Biological Waste
  • Old Latex Paint or Latex Paint in 1/2 Full Can.
