Background

Since the young couple husband and wife died within the same month -- he the third of April and she the 21st, in 1861 -- it seems likely there was an epidemic at the time.

Marie Louise was orphaned at the age of two and was raised by her widowed grandmother. One winter they had nothing but potatoes to eat, which were boiled unpeeled. A kindly grocer gave them left-over brine from the pickle crock, which they used as seasoning.
