Open Transport

If you are using Apple's Open Transport networking software, chance are you have PPP installed to dial your modem.

PPP Control PanelEverything can be configured from the PPP Control Panel. To start the PPP Control Panel, click on the Apple Menu apple.gif (225 bytes), choose Control Panels and click on PPP (on the i-Mac, choose Remote Access).

The figure at the right show the PPP (or Remote Access) Control Panel. The only information that needs to be filled in is your username (all lowercase), your password and the local phone number to call for your location:

360 942-5444
360 642-5444
360 484-4638

Note: If you have call waiting on the same phone line that your computer is connected to, enter a *70, (with the comma) before the appropriate phone number. This will disable call waiting for that phone call.
From the PPP menu at the top of your window, choose "TCP/IP...". This opens the TCP/IP Control Panel (shown below). Fill it out exactly as shown.

TCP/IP Control Panel

Close this window by clicking the square in the upper left corner of the window. When you do this, you will be prompted to save any changes. Click "Save" to save the changes that you have made. You will be back to your PPP (Remote Access) screen.

From the PPP menu, choose "Modem...". This opens the third and final screen needed to configure Open Transport using PPP.

Modem Control PanelProbably the only thing that needs to be changed on this screen is the Modem option. Make sure that your modem is shown on the Modem line. If it is not, then click on the pull down menu and choose your modem off the list.

When you close this window, you will be prompted to save your changes. Again, click "Save" to save the changes that you have made.

Once you are back to the PPP screen, you can connect by clicking on the "Connect" button. If everything is working properly, this will dial your modem and establish a connection for you. Once you are connect, then you can start the application you would like to use on the Internet (e.g. Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, Eudora, etc.)
